How to Choose the Correct Well Mat?

Ensuring you get the correct well mat for your needs can be a little tricky if you’re not familiar with the process. This is why loose lay mats are so popular, because of their ease and flexibility.

However, a correctly fitted well / recess mat is generally the safest matting option and can look very attractive too.

Below we cover some FAQs to help you make the correct choice, but if you require help, simply Contact Us.

What are Well Mats used for?

Well mats, also known as recess mats, are designed to fit inside mat wells in entrance areas to provide a safer entrance to a building.

Mat wells are recesses in the floor in which a mat is placed, so that the mat sits level with the surrounding floor. This reduces the trip hazard around the edges of the mat, which would otherwise be greater if the mat was loose laid on top of the floor.

Where are Well Mats used?

Typically used in busy entrances, well mats are the preferred choice of shops, restaurants, schools and in public buildings.

The fact that recess mats sit level with the surrounding floors is particularly important in areas where wheeled traffic enters the building, such as in shops, train stations and airports.

Pushchairs, wheelchairs and luggage needs to smoothly transition onto and over the mat and so recess mats are ideal because there is no raised edge to overcome.

Types of Mats used for Well Mats

ย Entrance matting is used for recess mats, because mat wells typically exist at the entrance to buildings. The recess mat needs to effectively stop dirt and moisture as well as hold onto it, so it doesnโ€™t track onto the floor immediately after the mat well.

Effective well mats will prevent dirt entering the building which will keep the building interior cleaner and reduce cleaning costs as a consequence. Safety will be improved by a reduction in slips, trips and falls otherwise associated with moisture ingress and trips associated with loose lay mats.

Because mat wells are fixed sizes, the mats need to be customisable sizes too. Well mats typically have more depth than standard mats, because they sit in the well and need to be level with the floor.

The mats used should also have a rigid backing so that it holds in place and lays flat in the well. The backing is normally thicker than standard mat backing to achieve the rigidity required.

Measuring for Mat Well Mats

Care needs to be taken when measuring for recess mats. The fitted mat needs to fit in the well correctly in all dimensions, width, length and depth. Otherwise gaps around the edges of the mats will look unsightly and can also cause a trip hazard.

Unfortunately, mat wells are not generally made with perfect 90-degree angles, so the width and length may not be the same at all points of the mat well. Multiple measurements should be taken along the width and length to address this issue. We recommend buying a mat slightly bigger than the measured mat well, to account for manufacturing tolerances, but also so the recess mat can be trimmed to fit the mat recess perfectly when fitting it on site.

The depth of the mat well also needs to be measured. Mat wells are not always perfectly level, so multiple measurements should be taken. If necessary, the base of the well may need to be levelled with floor screed.

Achieving the Correct Mat Well Depth

Ideally you should choose a well mat which has the correct depth for your mat well. The typical depths of mat wells in the UK are between 13 โ€“ 17mm.

Floor screed can be used to raise the height of the well if needed to ensure that the mat will be raised enough to sit flush with the surrounding floor.

A quicker and less expensive alternative to floor screed, can be to use marine plywood to raise the height instead. The plywood also needs to be cut to the exact dimensions of the mat well.
