Where do I use Anti-Slip Mats?

Where slips and falls are likely, anti-slip mats can provide the traction required to improve the health and safety of your facility. Our anti-slip mats are designed for use in areas such as:

  • Wet areas
  • Oily areas
  • Greasy areas
  • Swarf areas

In each of these areas, the risk of slips and falls are typically high, but the problem can be simply resolved by using an anti-slip mat. Weโ€™re here to help you choose the right mat.

Which Anti-Slip Mats should I use for Wet Areas?

The degree of water in wet areas can vary significantly and as a result so may the choice of mat you use. Mats used for pool sides or shower areas must cope with far more water than those used in a kitchen or vending areas for example.

Poolside and shower mats are also typically designed for people standing on them with bare feet, so the surface needs to be comfortable and usually antimicrobial to stop the build-up of bacteria. See our Heron Rib Barefoot Mats for a popular choice of mats designed to stop slips in barefoot areas with lots of water.

For wet areas with less water, in vending areas for example, you may wish to consider mats that contain the spills on the mat so that it can be cleaned away without spilling onto surrounding floors. Our Rubber Scrape Anti-Slip Mat is a good choice of anti-slip mat for this purpose.

In wet areas with good drainage, you may prefer the water to flow through the mat, in which case you should choose an anti-slip mat with holes. Our Rubber Ramp Mat is a good value mat with drainage holes.

Which Anti-Slip Mats should I use for Greasy Areas?

Kitchens and certain manufacturing environments encounter grease which can be a particular problem as it causes slip hazards as well as having an adverse effect on standard rubber mats. Grease can cause standard rubber mats to curl up at the edges, which itself can cause an additional trip hazard.

In greasy areas you are better to choose a nitrile rubber mat, such as our grease-proof Cushion Flow Mat or Red Commercial Kitchen Mat. These mats are ideal kitchen mats because they have excellent anti-slip properties, as well as having flow-through holes for liquids or food debris to flow away from the standing surface.

Which Anti-Slip Mats should I use for Oily Areas?

Similar to the effects of grease on mats covered above, oil can also cause degradation to standard rubber mats or mats made from PVC. Nitrile rubber mats, such as our Super Scrape anti-slip mats, are able to cope with most oils used in industrial settings and have excellent traction for safety underfoot.

Comfort Flow mats will also be an ideal choice for oily areas and feature flow-through holes to allow the oil to drain away from the standing surface.

Which Anti-Slip Mats should I use for Swarf Areas?

Swarf, such as metal filings or saw dust, can result in slippery flooring if left unmanaged. Anti-slip mats with holes are a good way of ensuring that the swarf falls through the matting and away from the surface the operator is working on. Our Vynagrip Heavy Duty Roll Mat is a sound choice in such environments, due to the fact it has an aggressive tread to provide excellent traction. Roll Mats can be lifted and rolled up easily for cleaning the swarf away beneath the matting.
