What are Barefoot Wet Area Mats?

Barefoot Wet Area Mats is the term used for matting designed for areas where people will be moving around barefoot, i.e. without shoes or socks on, and in areas which have a lot of water. They are used to provide a safe and comfortable surface.

Where to use Barefoot Mats?

They are typically used in leisure areas, such as in the following locations:

  • Sports & Leisure Facilities
  • Swimming Poolside
  • Showers
  • Changing Rooms
  • Toilets and Washrooms
  • Spas
  • Saunas
  • Jacuzzis
  • Boats / Yachts
  • Decking
  • Balconies

Why use them? โ€“ Slips, Comfort, Hygiene

Barefoot mats are used to give additional safety and comfort. From a safety perspective, all the barefoot mats sold on Trusted Mats will help to stop slips by providing an anti-slip surface to walk on. The mats have a textured surface to provide this traction, but it will not be an aggressive scraper surface you will find with normal anti-slip mats, because it also needs to be comfortable to walk on in bare feet.

Most mats have flow through holes to move the water away from the surface that is being stood and walked on. A dryer surface is a safer surface to walk on.

The mats will have low profile edging, without sharp edges or corners, to reduce trips and protect delicate feet and toes.

Some barefoot mats feature anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties, which can help improve hygiene. This helps prevent bacteria or fungus build up on the mats which may otherwise turn mats mouldy or be transferred between people who walk over the mats barefooted.

Cleaning

Barefoot mats are usually either small enough to move and lift or can be rolled up for cleaning the floor beneath the mat. Cleaning beneath the mats should be done to ensure that water can continue to flow through and away from the mat without being blocked by debris that has been filtered away from the mat surface.

The mat surface should also be regularly cleaned. This is usually done by hosing down or by using a mild detergent to remove the build-up of body fats and bacteria.

Should you choose Barefoot Mats, Rolls or Tiles?

The type of mat you choose depends on the area you need covering. For smaller areas a single mat should suffice. For large runs, for instance down corridors or alongside pools, barefoot roll mats are perfect. For large areas, or for areas of irregular shape, tiled mats are perfect because they can be laid to fit any area and can be cut around obstacles or fixtures as required.
