Coir Matting

Coir, made of natural coconut fibres, is a popular material used for coir matting. It is very effective at scraping dirt and absorbing moisture, due to the brush effect of the mat face. Our coir matting is PVC backed for rigidity and is supplied in full rolls or cut lengths. Coir matting is simple to further cut to size as required.

How do I cut Coir Matting to size?

PVC backed coir mats are simple to cut to size providing you have the right tools. You will need a sharp utility knife (Stanley knife), a steel rule, marker pen and a tape measure. This will ensure you are able to make accurate and straight cuts.

  1. Measure the inside of the well on all four sides and note the measurements.
  2. Flip the mat upside down and mark the corners of the well on the backing using the marker and tape measure. Bear in mind, because you have flipped the mat upside down, you will need to mirror the measurements.
  3. Join the dots with a straight line using your steel rule and pen to mark out the total area to be cut.
  4. Use the sharp utility knife and steel rule to make straight cuts along the lines. You will only need to cut through the depth of the PVC backing rather than the total depth of the mat.
  5. Separate the cuts from the main mat with a little force to separate the mat pile.
  6. Flip the mat over and place the mat in the well. If you measured and cut accurately it should be a perfect fit, but if necessary trim to fit.

Which depth of Coir Matting should I choose?

The depth you choose really depends on the placement of your mat. The main reason for different coir mat depths is for when they are placed in a mat well / recess. You should measure the depth of the well and choose the depth of mat closest to this measurement. This will ensure that the coir mat sits flush to the surrounding floor and will eliminate a trip hazard.

In the UK, the most common depth of mat well is 17mm. Bear in mind that the well depth may be uneven, so you may need to level it with floor screed. Also check there is enough clearance above the coir mat so that a door will open over it without obstruction.

If you can choose any depth of coir mat, then we recommend you go for a thinner depth. This will be easier to clean and is also easier for wheeled traffic to transition through.

How do I measure my mat well / recess?

Ensure you measure all four sides of your mat well, because we find that not all wells are made as perfect rectangles with 90 degree angles. We advise you to buy coir matting at a slightly larger size than you measure, so that you can trim to fit on site as necessary and ensure a good fit.

Remember to also measure the depth of the well, so that you choose the correct depth of mat to lay level with the surrounding floor.

How long does Coir Matting last?

How long a coir mat will last has a lot to do with the following:

  • The quality of the coir matting
  • How frequently it is used – the less it is used the longer it will last
  • The type of traffic that passes over the mat, wheeled or foot – Heavy wheeled traffic will wear down the mat pile more quickly
  • How exposed the mat is to the weather – The more exposed to rain, the quicker it will deteriorate
  • What type of dirt and what amount of dirt and water it needs to remove – Sand, grit and mud will wear coir matting more quickly
  • How well cleaned and maintained the mat is – Regular cleaning of the mat will maintain effectiveness and reduce damage

How long does Coir Matting last in comparison to other mats?

Coir is a natural fibre which is likely to wear more quickly than man-made fibres from plastics. Man-made fibres used in mats typically include nylon, PET, polypropylene and microfibre.

Natural cotton mats also tend to last longer than coir mats.

Signs of wear on coir mats include a worn-path appearance. This is normally through the centre of the mat where people typically walk on the mat. The pile will crush down and discolour in this area. As the pile wears, the amount of scraping reduces and the mat becomes less effective at removing dirt and water.

How does Coir perform versus other mat materials?

Coir tends to be a very effective dirt scraping and moisture removing mat. The aggressive brush bristles scrape mud away. The natural coir fibre is absorbent which helps remove moisture. There are few types of mat that can do both of these jobs better than coir.

Coir’s weakness is that it tends to wear more quickly than other materials used for matting. To remain effective, coir must be in a good, clean condition with enough pile to be able to scrape and wipe traffic passing over the mat.

For scraping / dirt removal mats, mats made with coarse brushing fibres, such as nylon, may scrape more effectively and will last longer.

For moisture absorption purposes, cotton and microfibre mats tend to be more effective and generally last longer. See our Absorb Microfibre Heavy Duty Mats which combine microfibre with nylon and hold 34% more water than standard mats.

However, coir matting does both these jobs very well. An entrance mat with scraping nubs and moisture containment may be preferred, such as our Aqua Barrier Mat.
